TV personality, restaurateur Marsh Shapiro dies

Marshall "Marsh" Shapiro, 74, who was as accessible, popular and welcome as the beer mug he created and filled for a half-million birthday celebrants at his Nitty Gritty Bar, died Wednesday at a Madison-area hospice. Shapiro was a restaurant/bar owner of the Nitty Gritty (1968 to 2009), a sports reporter and anchor for WKOW-TV (Ch. 27), a radio broadcaster of University of Wisconsin sports, a member of the city's powerful Alcohol License Review Committee and a lifelong Madison resident.
