Judge denies Justice Department motion to subpoena Capital Times reporter

A Sauk County judge has denied a request by the state Department of Justice to subpoena Capital Times reporter Jessica VanEgeren along with two other Madison-area journalists to testify in its case against a dairy farmer accused of selling food without proper licenses. Vernon Hershberger, whose farm is in Loganville, sold raw milk and other dairy products to roughly 100 families from a small store on his farm several days a week. In 2010, officials from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection raided the farm on the heels of a veto of a law that would have permitted the sale of raw, or unpasteurized, milk.
